Mary Shkoury, Prevention Consultant, Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario gave a practical presentation on how to protect oneself from frauds and scams.
She talked about the 3 Components of Financial Abuse: Greed, False sense of Entitlement and opportunity. She talked about the 5 key scams to watch out for in 2023, including lottery scam,grandparent scam, income tax scam, romance scam and antivirus phishing scam.
Mary shared the 4 Rs: Recognize, Reject, Reach out and Report. It is ok to say NO and question any request for information. Never give information to someone you don’t know.

* Contact your financial institutions
* CONTACT THE POLICE
* Report the incident
* Protect yourself from future fraud
Participants shared their personal stories of recent fraud. It was eye-opening to see all the risks that are out there and how older adults are being targeted.
